What prompted you to open Bec Interior Design? A real love for design, I have had a passion for it since a young age. Growing up you wouldn’t catch me missing an episode of Design Inc or any trending home show on HGTV, I craved watching the process and transformation taking over the PVR so I never missed a beat. As I grew up, the pressures of having a stable job became more alluring and I enrolled into nursing. It did not take long until I knew, I had to do what I loved. Once I decided to pursue my passion, my family and friends were overjoyed as they knew it was the path for me (you think they would have told me sooner, but you have to figure it out for yourself!). After working for several years in the design world, at a few firms varying from small too large, I developed a great knowledge base and realized how much I was drawn to residential design. I learned that, I appreciate the client services aspects, the business components and overall the creative elements all combined into one amazing package, it is perfect for me. I love being part of the process, I really enjoy working with the clients, having the conversations about their wish lists, their ideas and helping create their perfect space, it is what drives me to do my best. After working many long nights, juggling 2 jobs, working 7 days a week for almost 4 years, the realization that if I am going to work this hard then why not do it for myself and it all came together after that and here we are!
Where did you go to school? I started at the University of Western enrolling in the nursing program, only to drop out a year in. I have always had an artsy side and grew up dreaming of a designer but was unsure at the age of 17 when making this big life decision. When I came to my senses, I switched to Georgian College and completed my Advanced Diploma in Interior Design. I then continued to completed my Interior Design Degree a couple years later in a long distance education program. In the past two years, I have spent my evenings completing many courses in architectural technologies, project management and business administration. I am a huge advocate for continuing education, in the career you can never know enough.
Design advice to live by? Your home should describe you, make impactful design choices that are timeless yet functional. Every space should have something conversational and unexpected, it adds personality and life. Never start without a plan, Pinterest is a great way to get endless inspiration to conceptualize your vision and ideas. Lastly, never underestimate the impact of a fresh coat of paint.
What is your favourite space to design? If I could say all of them, I would. If I had to really had to choose, it would be a living room. I enjoy creating a space that conveys a mood, using textiles with various textures to create a very layered look.
What would we find you doing when you're not working? Working is my happy place, most days it doesn’t even feel like I am working. I create great relationships with my clients and they often become very good friends. When I need some down time, I am off on the trails walking my golden retriever Hudson or brainstorming new project ideas scrolling through Pinterest (I sound so boring when I read that, but I promise that is not the case!)
What is your personal style? This is a tricky one, I love modern contemporary but also am very drawn to traditional aspects. The best way to describe my style is contemporary but practical and functional. If the space does not function then what is the point!
